Elite asked:
from my window i can see the town clock. every day i check the clock on my mantlepiece against the time shown on the town clock. it usually agrees, but one morning a strange situation occurred. the clock on my mantle showed the time as 5 minutes to 9. 1 minute later it read 4 minutes to 9. 2 minutes later it read 4 minutes to 9. 1 minute later it read 5 minutes to 9. at 9 i suddenly realized what was wrong. can you tell me what it was?

Google really takes the fun out of this.
You can find the answer posted on a message board by searching on
“clock on my mantle showed the time as 5 minutes to 9″
(including the quotes).
Here’s a hint:
The town clock is not involved.
The mantle clock is defective in some way.
